Mosquitoes literally suck. They are a pest that bugs us even after they’ve landed on us. Getting rid of mosquitoes is not a once and done thing either, since they like tree cavities and clogged gutters, as well as anywhere else where there’s standing water. There are several different species of mosquitoes; some that prefer bacteria and sweat, while others are attracted to carbon dioxide and certain body odors. Whatever type of mosquito is bugging you, Bug & Weed Mart carries a number of products to help get rid of them if natural mosquito repellents don't work.
There are a few natural mosquito repellents that many swear by, including:
- Lemon eucalyptus oil is one of the more well-known natural mosquito repellents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has even approved eucalyptus oil as an effective mosquito repellent. You can create your own mixture with one part lemon eucalyptus oil to 10 parts sunflower oil or witch hazel.
- Crushed lavender flowers produce a fragrance and oil that can act as a natural mosquito repellent.
- Cinnamon Oil has been known to repel mosquitoes, too. Mix 24 drops of oil for every 4 ounces of water. You can spray the fluid onto your skin or clothes.
- Mix five drops of thyme oil with 2 ounces of water for a natural mosquito repellent spray.
Essential oils should always be tested on the skin before using and should never be used full strength.
To repel mosquitoes around your house, eliminate their breeding places, which are any objects that can hold as little as 1 tablespoon of water. Mosquito breeding spots also include old tires, abandoned tubs, and buckets.
Bug & Weed Mart sells natural mosquito repellents like bacterium granules that are safe around animals, but can control mosquito larvae from 100 square feet to up to four acres. Stop in at any of our Valley-wide locations to see how we can help you get rid of mosquitoes.
