The German cockroach is a scavenger, feeding on just about any food source, including toothpaste, soap, even book bindings. They reproduce quickly, producing 4 to 6 egg cases during the course of their lives, with each egg case, or ootheca, containing approximately 30 to 40 eggs.
Adult German cockroaches are light brown or tan in color, with two black horizontal stripes located on the area behind the head, and growing to a length of 10-16 mm. The much smaller young, or nymphs, are darker – almost black in color – but also have black stripes behind the head. Adults have wings, though they rarely fly, preferring to run. Droppings look like dark, “pepper-like” material, often found on countertops or in drawers, in the corners of rooms, and along the tops of doors. Bathrooms and kitchens are their favorite places.
German cockroaches ARE trouble! They can spread disease, contaminate our food, and cause allergies and asthma. German cockroaches are also known for transmitting a number of pathogens, including E. coli, Salmonella spp., and Typhus, making it even more important to get rid of these pests.
The best ways to rid yourself of German cockroach infestation is to stop them from ever coming into your house in the first place.
- eliminate food sources: wipe down countertops and sinks and don’t leave dirty dishes or sponges in the sink overnight
- get rid of water: fix leaking faucets and remove standing water
- declutter: to put it bluntly, Clutter Kills. It significantly impedes your efforts to be pest-free
- seal cracks and crevices: around pipes/drywall, near doors/windows, along baseboards
