Monsoon has only just arrived, but as we head further into July and August, we will begin to see the storms peak. On average, it is during this time of year that we typically receive almost half of our annual rainfall in the Valley. While the monsoon calms the high temps somewhat, it can also bring a lot of destruction, particularly from wind damage. That is why it is essential to check the trees and shrubs in your yard and protect them from potential high monsoon winds.
Here is a list of our top tips to save your yard from destruction caused by wind damage this summer:
- Pruning: Proper trimming of trees will provide protection from high winds. We advise it is best to trim during the dormant season, but if your tree went through a growth spurt in spring, we recommend cutting back heavy or hanging branches to keep it from getting uprooted when a monsoon hits.
- Windbreaks: Look for existing windbreaks in your yard. When planting trees or shrubs in your yard, position them near buildings, high walls, or other trees to block the wind from reaching them. You can also use your D.I.Y. skills to make a windbreak/screen using burlap. Attach the material to poles and secure in the soil to shield the tree from wind damage.
- Take Cover: Keep potted trees and shrubs closer to the house and under patio coverings to reduce breakages from high winds. You might even consider taking them indoors when it is particularly stormy.
- Stake it: When the tree is newly planted, it is advisable to strengthen and secure it with a stake, but as the tree matures you should remove the stake. This allows the tree to flex in the wind and trains the trunk to be stronger.
If high winds prevail, your yard should be able to bear the brunt of it, but fear not, we also have some great tips on how to clean up after a monsoon storm hits.
