Cockroach photo

  • The American cockroach is the largest of the house-infesting cockroach.
  • Brown banded cockroaches get their name from the two lighter bands they have across their dark brownish bodies. In addition to the distinctive banding, males have full wings, which reach beyond the tip of their rather pointed abdomens, but females have underdeveloped wings, much shorter than their broad, rounded abdomens.
  • Oriental Cockroaches are large very dark (almost black, but sometimes dark reddish-brown), shiny cockroaches which live in sewers and similar wet, decaying organic matter. They are sometimes called “water bugs” because they come out of drains, and “black beetle cockroaches” because of their smooth, dark bodies.

Real Deal on Roaches

There are two types of roaches we treat for in Arizona: small or German (house/apartment roach) and big Turkestan or American (sewer roach).

Most sewer roaches come from the ground. They burrow into moist areas, under shrubs, planter boxes, gravel, river rock, in sprinkler/water meter boxes. The sewer roach is easily controlled by a combination of granules and sprays outside the home, and sprays or glue traps inside.

How to Get Rid of Roaches

  1. Sprinkle granules lightly in these nuisance areas; water in one time.
  2. Spray patio, doorframes, window frames, sides of building, etc.

The “house” or German (small) roach is more difficult: Because most of these roaches have become resistant to sprays, we instead use a combination of an invisible, odorless roach sterilant, a crack & crevice dust and roach bait. Apply roach sterilant spray evenly and lightly to all cupboards, including every room and every baseboard.
